Dering, a well-connected merchant and silversmith was appointed customs collector by George Washington in 1789 when Sag Harbor was designated a United States Federal Port of Entry. Nathaniel Hurd originally created the bookplate for Thomas Dering (1720-1785) of Shelter Island, and later re-cut the plate for his son, Henry Packer Dering
